Mowing your lawn is a good excuse to get out and enjoy the outdoors. There are some general rules when it comes to lawn mowing. Firstly it is recommended that only 1/3 of the leaf blade be mowed off in a single mowing. This is to prevent scalping, a stressed lawn can go into shock and take longer to recover. Maintain your lawn mower so the blades are sharp, mowing lawn with dull blades can tear the lawn rather than giving it a nice clean cut. Lawn over time can become spongy, you can hire a dethatcher machine or you can cut your lawn back agressively but only do this over winter when the lawn is dormant.
KIKUYU - Will generally require mowing weekly.
BUFFALO - Mowing can be reduced to fortnightly, you may choose to mow weekly which is ok. Don't be suprised if there is minimal clippings in your mowers catcher, this is normal for Buffalo.
Ensure you have an adequate watering system in place, remember to comply with your local Councils water restrictions. Water you lawn on a weekly basis both Buffalo and Kikuyu, remember deep infrequent waterings ecourage a deep root system which will help your Turf handle the extreme heat when it comes. Avoid watering often and for short periods, this encourages the roots to stay shallow in the soil profile, your Turf will be susceptible to heat stress and diseases and will struggle to survive in extreme heat conditions. During extreme heat waves as experienced in Griffith, Kikuyu will require 2 deep waterings per week, Buffalo will most certainly require at least 2 waterings per week during this period. This is something you will have to gauge yourself to get used to, this advice is a guide only and you should monitor your soils ability to hold moisture to get an idea of the watering regime that is required for your situation.
As a guide it is recommended that you Fertilize your lawn at the start of every season, there are various types of different fertilzer available for Turf. Choose a fertilizer which is considered a complete lawn fertilizer or "Food" as they sometimes call it.
For lawns less than 8 weeks old use "Scotts Lawn Builder - New Lawns and Repairs"
For lawns over 2 month old use "Scotts Lawn Builder - Regular" or "Scotts Lawn Builder + Wetting Agent"
These are just some examples of some good quality fertilizers that are available at stores like Bunnings, alternatively you can visit a rural store and they can advise you on suitable Fertilizers to use on lawn. Remember to water the Fertilizer in immediately after applying it.
